Old Sacramento State Historic Park

Located in the heart of Sacramento, Old Sacramento State Historic Park offers a unique urban stargazing experience. Yes, it’s very close to the city, but there are tons of open areas that will make for a fantastic spot to watch the stars. The backdrop of the nostalgic buildings and cobbled streets look stunning against the dark sky. Oh, during the day, be sure to explore Gold Rush-era exhibits and riverfront attractions.

Stargazing Spots within 1 hour of Sacramento

Whether you want a quick getaway or simply want to improve your chances of watching the stars, here are a few places for stargazing near Sacramento. 

Ancil Hoffman Park

Nestled just outside Sacramento, Ancil Hoffman Park provides a serene environment for stargazing. The park’s lush greenery and tranquil setting ensure minimal light interference. There’s a lot of small beach-like spots along the river, so you can dip your feet while watching the stars or lay a blanket.

By day, you can enjoy hiking trails and picnic areas, while the American River’s gentle flow adds to the park’s allure. 

Apple Hill 

Most people go to Apple Hill for great apple products (as the name suggests!). But it’s also a great Sacramento stargazing spot for those who enjoy a rural escape.

Apple Hill sits across the street from Boa Vista Farms and has a grassy area with tons of picnic tables – the picnic tables are always accessible. The area has reduced light pollution and is so picturesque surrounded by orchards. Arrive during the day, get some apple pies and indulge in them while wandering in the night sky.

Beals Point in Folsom Lake State Recreational Area

Situated near Folsom Lake, Beals Point is gorgeous for stargazing in Sacramento. They have campsites, bike trails, swimming, boating, kayaking, all the other fun stuff!

There’s a really nice, sandy beach, which is a nice break from the rocky shores elsewhere along the lake with plenty of space to set up a telescope. Foresthill Bridge

Foresthill Bridge offers a unique vantage point if you are seeking elevated views. Located above the American River, this bridge provides minimal light pollution and an open panorama for stargazing. It’s also a great place for those who enjoy a bit of solitude. Feel free to explore nearby trails and enjoy the beauty of the Auburn State Recreation Area under the night sky.

University of California, Davis

University of California, Davis provides another Sacramento stargazing option for those who’re willing to drive. Its expansive campus offers dark corners and open spaces, allowing for peaceful stargazing. Also, pay attention to the Astronomy Club at UC Davis! They hold different events and activities throughout the year, all of which are open to the public. Public Viewing Nights are mainly held on Friday nights, but always check their calendar.

Observatories are always great options for astronomy lovers of all ages. Near Chico, the Chico Community Observatory is a top notch small community observatory that invites stargazers to explore the cosmos and learn about it in a deeper way.

The knowledgeable staff with their telescopes and enjoy a guided stargazing experience. You also have Bidwell Park’s open areas and natural beauty for setting up your telescope. 

Oroville Dam

Dams are a hugely popular alternative for stargazing. Located 68 miles away from Sacramento, Oroville Dam offers a peaceful stargazing location. Its remote location and minimal light pollution provide a clear view of the night sky.

The top of the dam spans a mile long, and when full, provides a tranquil environment for all to enjoy. There is parking at the beginning of the one mile road across the dam, but also at the end of that road, too.
