Blackbird State Forest

First on our list of spots for stargazing in Delaware is Blackbird State Forest. A serene stargazing spot in Delaware with ample open spaces, Blackbird State Forest offers a tranquil escape from city lights.

The property is home to some of the most secluded campsites in Delaware – these are primitive campsites, by the way. Venture in the 40 miles of trails to escape from light pollution and enjoy a night under the stars.

Brandywine Creek State Park

Nestled along the Brandywine River, Brandywine Creek State Park provides a peaceful setting for watching the stars in Delaware. Away from urban light pollution, visitors can gaze up at the night sky and marvel at the celestial wonders.

This is an awesome preserve, full of greenery; the open meadows are excellent for setting up your telescope. The park also offers a network of trails for walking or hiking around deep wooded areas and wetlands.

Cape Henlopen State Park

Cape Henlopen State Park sits under some of the darkest skies in Delaware. They said, you know you’re in for a Delaware stargazing treat. The park is not only free from light pollution but also offers unobstructed views of the night sky over the Atlantic Ocean. Who doesn’t enjoy some stargazing with coastal charm?

The park’s open beaches create a prime spot for observing stars, planets, and the occasional meteor shower.

Delaware Seashore State Park

With its miles of pristine coastline, Delaware Seashore State Park has no shortage of stargazing spots for those who enjoy a good night sky with a backdrop of the sea.

Head to the beach, unwind on the sandy shores, and enjoy the vastness of the night sky above the sparkling waves. If you want to spend the night, the Northside campground is very nice with lots of space between sites.

Fenwick Island State Park

Fenwick Island State Park is another coastal gem for stargazing. The park is Delaware’s southernmost beach, meaning there’s minimal light pollution from nearby urban centers. Fenwick Island State Park offers three miles of ocean beaches along with access to the Little Assawoman Bay, a great spot for your artsy night sky photos!

Holts Landing State Park

Tucked away from bustling areas, Holts Landing State Park is a hidden treasure for stargazers right by the bay. Its marshland surroundings do a great job blocking the city lights and provide a peaceful backdrop for exploring the cosmos on clear nights.

While the skies are fantastic, there are tons of tall pine trees which may hamper your views, but it’s not something you can fix! Just find one of the brand new benches to sit down and rest or enjoy open-sky views.

Killens Pond State Park

Ask locals and they will vehemently admit that Killens Pond State Park is the perfect destination for a memorable camping and stargazing experience. From its pristine wilderness to the abundance of recreational activities, your time at this state park will be filled with adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable moments.

The park offers tons of picturesque locations for stargazing in Delaware – the large pond is perfect for astrophotography if that’s something you want to try. For those spending the night, the park offers very cheap campsites and cabins compared to anywhere else around here.

Mt. Cuba Observatory

For those seeking a more structured stargazing experience, Mt. Cuba Observatory offers astronomy enthusiasts access to high-quality telescopes and expert guidance.

The Mt. Cuba Astronomical Observatory holds public night events, as well as family-friendly and children’s programming. Also, the Delaware Astronomical Society meets here every Tuesday. The observatory has tons of amazing scopes – much bigger than what would be found in anyone’s backyard. You’ll love the staff at the observatory, they will get you into astronomy at no cost and even loan their telescopes!

Port Mahon

Port Mahon is a quaint coastal village with minimal light pollution. Needless to say, it is a delightful spot for stargazing along Delaware’s coast. Visitors can set up their telescopes along the water’s edge and enjoy the enchanting night sky. Port Mahon has 340 acres of beaches, salt marshes, and tidal creeks. There is also an observation platform that allows astronomy enthusiasts a great view of the skies.

Sussex County

A rural region with wide-open spaces, Sussex County is known for providing astrophotographers with their very best shots! You’ll find numerous spots for stargazing away from the city lights. Its peaceful countryside setting allows for unhindered views of the stars and planets. Simply drive around Slower Lower, find a farm road, pull over, and get ready for a night spectacle.

Trap Pond State Park

Trap Pond State Park is famous for its stunning cypress trees and serene waters. But, it’s also one of the darkest Delaware stargazing locations. The park is nestled well off the beaten path in Laurel – there’s barely any sign of much light pollution around.

No matter what you’re doing here the pond is the place to be. During the day, you can paddle on the pond, and during the night set your telescope and gaze up at the stars.

Woodside Farm Creamery

While known for its delicious ice cream, Woodside Farm Creamery also offers stargazing opportunities in its countryside location.

After enjoying a sweet treat, visitors can lie back and take in the starry spectacle above. This favorite ice cream shop offers scheduled telescope viewing nights throughout the summer guided by the Delaware Astronomical Society and the Mt. Cuba Astronomical Observatory.
